Consumer Law: the Elderly And Disabled

The elderly and the disabled have special consumer rights under the Georgia Unfair Deceptive Practices Towards the Elderly Act. This Georgia act contemplates and provides additional penalties on entities that target these consumers through scams and deceptive business practices.

The elderly and disabled also have rights when it comes to purchasing assistive technologies costing $1,000.00 or more. That is, technologies that assist a person with disabilities to perform specific tasks such as moving, walking, standing, speaking, breathing, hearing, seeing, learning, working, sleeping, reaching, grasping, or carrying for himself or herself that would not be possible for such person without an assistive technology device; for example a wheel chair, an adjustable bed, hearing aids, dentures, glasses and so forth. If you have purchased any assistive technology, among other consumer rights, you have a 30 day right to cancel the contract, return the purchase and receive a refund.
